Hello there!

Over the last 20 years and a bit, my professional adventure has taken me all over the map – both literally and figuratively. I left my home town in Ontario (the tomato capital of Canada) to study at the University of Windsor, where I fell in love with the idea of visual storytelling through filmmaking during my Communications Studies and Theatre undergrad. That took me to Sheridan College where I got my post grad certificate in Advanced Television and Film, majoring in Cinematography and Screenwriting. I moved to the West coast in 2006 and worked in the film industry for a few years, on set in the camera department (sometimes on the road In PEI, Newfoundland or the Yukon), and started building my first photo business side hustle while juggling a few jobs – one of which was my first job as a photographer at a grad portrait studio.

A lifelong learner, I moved even further West to explore teaching in Victoria. I taught for 12 years in the secondary school system: theatre, art, digital media, photography, animation and even yearbook resulting in an award-winning book. Most recently my journey has taken me to Camosun College and their Communications department, where I teach videography and photography. I love it! And alongside it, guess what? My humble side hustle can keep going and growing!

Now, I stress to my students that it’s so important to have hobbies. Hobbies can make us feel more whole.

For me, it was costume making. I’m a huge Halloween nut – my birthday is in late October, so yes, Halloween is the best day ever – and costuming just came naturally. The older I got, the more interested I was in building more accurate costumes.

Being a massive Star Wars nerd (yes, I have beat Star Wars Trivial Pursuit in one round), I had to dive into this club called the 501st Legion.
Turns out they are a pretty rad group that not only focuses on accurate costuming, but raises money for charity as well. Win win!

Little did I know this was a bit of a rabbit hole: there are these things called 3D printers…and if you ever get one…your life will be forever changed. I have picked up so many skills from this hobby that I never thought I would – airbrushing, weathering, soldering, Arduino coding…yes…I build droids as well. Yes, BB-8 works with magnets. Yes, he is adorable.
